    Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter: Experiment summary after the first year of global mapping of Mars

    The Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA), an instrument on the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft, has measured the topography, surface roughness, and 1.064-μm reflectivity of Mars and the heights of volatile and dust clouds. This paper discusses the function of the MOLA instrument and the acquisition, processing, and correction of observations to produce global data sets. The altimeter measurements have been converted to both gridded and spherical harmonic models for the topography and shape of Mars that have vertical and radial accuracies of ~1 m with respect to the planet's center of mass. The current global topographic grid has a resolution of 1/64° in latitude × 1/32° in longitude (1 × 2 km^2 at the equator). Reconstruction of the locations of incident laser pulses on the Martian surface appears to be at the 100-m spatial accuracy level and results in 2 orders of magnitude improvement in the global geodetic grid of Mars. Global maps of optical pulse width indicative of 100-m-scale surface roughness and 1.064-μm reflectivity with an accuracy of 5% have also been obtained

    Dynamics and transport properties of Kondo insulators

    A many-body theory of paramagnetic Kondo insulators is described, focusing specifically on single-particle dynamics, scattering rates, d.c. transport and optical conductivities. This is achieved by development of a non-perturbative local moment approach to the symmetric periodic Anderson model within the framework of dynamical mean-field theory. Our natural focus is the strong coupling, Kondo lattice regime; in particular the resultant `universal' scaling behaviour in terms of the single, exponentially small low-energy scale characteristic of the problem. Dynamics/transport on all relevant (ω,T\omega, T) scales are considered, from the gapped/activated behaviour characteristic of the low-temperature insulator through to explicit connection to single-impurity physics at high ω\omega and/or TT; and for optical conductivities emphasis is given to the nature of the optical gap, the temperature scale responsible for its destruction, and the consequent clear distinction between indirect and direct gap scales. Using scaling, explicit comparison is also made to experimental results for d.c. transport and optical conductivites of Ce_3Bi_4Pt_3, SmB_6 and YbB_{12}. Good agreement is found, even quantitatively; and a mutually consistent picture of transport and optics results.Comment: 49 pages, 23 figure

    The effect of dust scattering on the timing properties of black holes

    It has been known that sources with high absorption column density also have high dust column density along the line of sight. The differential delays caused by small angle scattering of X rays by dust may have important effects on the power spectra of Galactic black holes at low energies, and impact studies that use the relation between the rms amplitude of variability and energy to determine the origin of QPOs from these sources. We observed the high absorption column density (NH ˜1023 cm-2 ) GBH 1E1740.7-2942 for 20 ks simultaneously with XMM-Newton and RXTE. By comparing the power spectra from the events in the core of the point spread function (PSF) of XMM-Newton EPIC-PN (using imaging and excluding the scattering halo) and the RXTE data, we quantified the effects of small angle scattering on the timing properties of this source. The rms amplitude of variability in ˜2-6 keV band obtained from the XMM-Newton data is higher than that of the RXTE as expected from the a scattering halo contribution in the RXTE

    Policy reform and farmers' wheat allocation in rural China: a case study

    Market-oriented policy reforms often have important effects on farm-level grain production and utilisation decisions in developing countries. China’s grain farmers are of particular interest because of China’s importance in world grain markets and because of China’s recent major agricultural policy advances and retrenchments. An empirical evaluation of market liberalisation among farmers located in two provinces in China on farm-level wheat consumption, market sales and on-farm storage during 1994 is presented.     Journal publishing with Acrobat: the CAJUN project

    The publication of material in electronic form should ideally preserve, in a unified document representation, all of the richness of the printed document while maintaining enough of its underlying structure to enable searching and other forms of semantic processing. Until recently it has been hard to find a document representation which combined these attributes and which also stood some chance of becoming a de facto multi-platform standard. This paper sets out experience gained within the Electronic Publishing Research Group at the University of Nottingham in using Adobe Acrobat software and its underlying PDF (Portable Document Format) notation. The CAJUN project1 (CD-ROM Acrobat Journals Using Networks) began in 1993 and has used Acrobat software to produce electronic versions of journal papers for network and CD-ROM dissemination. The paper describes the project's progress so far and also gives a brief assessment of PDF's suitability as a universal document interchange standard
